Seven Cell Organelles Flashcards
Cell Membrane
A). Semipermeable bilayer of lipid molecules
B). Controls transportation of materials into and out of the cell
Nucleus
A). Spherical, double membrane-bound organelle containing chromatin (DNA) and nucleoli (RNA)
B). Controls the synthesis of proteins which give the cell specific abilities. Also contains genetic material for passage to offspring.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A). Double-layered network of membranous channels extending throughout the cytoplasm
1) . Rough: Ribosomes 2) . Smooth: No Ribosomes
B). Rough E.R. : Modification and packaging of newly synthesized proteins
Smooth E.R. : Lipid, steroid, and carbohydrate synthesis; Calcium ion storage
Golgi Complex:
A). Flattened stacks of membranous sacs
B). Secrete proteins to the outside of the cell and may form lysosomes internally.
Mitochondria
A). Rod-shaped double membrane, with inner membrane folds enclosing metabolic enzymes.
B). Produce 95% of the ATP required to power the cell
Lysosomes
A). Rounded, membrane bound containers filled with digestive enzymes
B). Intracellular removal of damaged organelles or of pathogens.
Microtubules
A). 9+3 array of straight, bundled, hollow tubules.
B). -Serve as internal support or transport channels within the cell.
-Form cilia and mitotic spindles.
