Loose Connective Tissue Flashcards
Areolar Connective tissue
A). Characteristics: Randomly-placed fibroblasts and macrophages in a semi-fluid matrix, containing collagen and elastin protein.
B). Locations: Within and deep to the dermis of skin, and covered by the epithelial lining of the digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts; between muscles; around blood vessels, nerves, and joints
C). Functions: Cushions organs; provides support but permits independent movement; phagocytic cells provide defense against pathogens
Adipose Connective tissue
A). Characteristics: Large, fat-filled cells packed tightly in a sparse, non-fibrous matrix.
B). Locations: deep to the skin, especially at sides, buttocks, breasts; padding around eyes and kidneys
C). Functions: Provides padding and cushions shocks; insulates; stores energy
Reticular Connective tissue
A). Characteristics: reticular fibers, macrophages, fibroblasts, and fibrocytes.
B). Locations: Liver; kidney; spleen; lymph nodes; bone marrow
C). Provides supporting framework
