Connective tissue(cartilage) Flashcards
Hyaline cartilage
A). Characteristics: Clumped chondrocytes surrounded by a gelatin-like matrix
B). Locations: between tips of ribs and bones of sternum; covering bone surfaces at synovial joints; supporting larynx, trachea, and bronchi; forming part of nasal septum
C). Functions: provides stiff but somewhat flexible support; reduces friction between bony surfaces
Elastic cartilage
A). Characteristics: Short, wavy elastin fibers forming a weblike mesh around clustered chondrocytes.
B). Locations: Auricle of external ear; epiglottis; auditory canal; cuneiform cartilages of larynx
C). Functions: provides support, but tolerates distortion without damage and returns to original shape
Fibrous cartilage
A). Characteristics: Small cells, often distributed in rows, situated amid thick, often parallel bundles of collagen fibers.
B). Locations: Pads within knee joint; between pubic bones of pelvis; intervertebral discs
C). Functions: resists compression; prevents bone to bone contact; limits relative movement
