Muscle Tissue Flashcards
Skeletal Muscle
A). Characteristics:
- cells are long, cylindrical, striated, and multinucleate.
- contain actin and myosin
- bound together by areolar connective tissue
B). Locations: Combined with connective tissue and neural tissue in skeletal muscle
C). Functions: Moves or stabilizes the position of the skeleton; generates heat; protects internal organs
Cardiac Muscle:
A). Characteristics:
- Cells are short, branched, and striated, usually with a single nucleus; cells are connected by intercalated discs
- involuntary
B). Location: heart
C). Functions: Circulates blood; maintains blood pressure
Smooth Muscle:
A). Characteristics:
-Cells are short, spindle-shaped, and non striated, with a single, central nucleus.
B). Locations: Found in the walls of blood vessels and in digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive organs
C). Functions: moves food, urine, and reproductive tract secretions; controls diameter of respiratory passageways; regulates diameter of blood vessels
