Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Simple Squamous Epithelium
A). Locations: Mesothelia lining ventral body cavities; endothelia lining heart and blood vessels; portions of kidney tubules; inner lining of cornea; alveoli of lungs
B). Functions: Reduces friction; controls vessel permeability; performs absorption and secretion
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
A). Locations: Surface of skin; lining of oral cavity, throat, esophagus, rectum, anus, and vagina.
B). Functions: Provides physical protection against abrasion, pathogens, and chemical attack
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A). Locations: Glands; Ducts; thyroid gland
B). Functions: Limited protection; secretion and absorption
Stratified cuboidal epithelium(rare):
A). Locations: Lining of some ducts(rare)
B). Functions: Protection;Secretion; absorption
Simple Columnar Epithelium
A). Locations: Lining of stomach, intestine, gallbladder, urine tubes, and collecting ducts of kidneys
B). Functions: Protection; secretion; absorption
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
A). Locations: Small areas of the pharynx, epiglottis, anus, mammary gland, salivary gland ducts, and urethra
B). Protection
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium
A). Locations: Lining of nasal cavity, trachea, and bronchi; portions of male reproductive tract
B). Functions: protection; secretion
Transitional Epithelium
A). Locations: Urinary bladder; renal pelvis; ureters
B). Functions: Permits expansion and recoil after stretching
