The Cardio Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the cardio-respiratory system responsible for?
Taking in and delivering oxygen around the body to the vital organs and working muscles. It also helps to remove waste products from our bodies.
What are the three main functions of the cardio-respiratory system?
1 - Transport oxygen / removal of carbon dioxide and nutrients.
2 - Clotting of wounds.
3 - Regulation of body temperature.
What is vasodilation?
When the blood vessels near skin dilate.
What is vasoconstriction?
When the blood vessels near skin constrict.
What are the 4 components of blood?
White blood cells
Red blood cells
Platelets
Plasma
What do white blood cells do?
Fights disease - immune system.
What do red blood cells do?
Transport oxygen around the body.
What do platelets do?
Forms blood clots.
What is plasma?
A yellow liquid in the blood that carries salts and sugars.
What are the 3 types of blood vessel?
Arteries, capillaries, veins.
What is an artery/arteries?
Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to the rest of the body. They are shaped like tubes and branch into aterioles to reach the organs and tissues.
What are the capillaries?
The smallest of all the blood vessels and form the connection betweem veins and arteries.
What are veins?
Blood vessels that carry blood toward the heart. Most veins carry deoxygenated blood from tissues back to the heart.
In order, name all the blood vessels in the heart.
1 - Aorta 2 - Pulmonary Artery 3 - Pulmonary Vien 4 - Left atrium 5 - Semi-lunar valve 6 - Bicuspid valve 7 - Left ventricle 8 - Septum 9 - Right ventricle 10 - Tricuspid valve 11 - Semi-lunar valve 12 - Right atrium 13 - Vena Cava
What is vascular shunting?
The process where the body is able to redirect blood flow to areas of the body where it is needed most.
