What is a PED?
Substances that are used to enhance a person’s performace either in physical activity and training or daily life. They are used to gain a physical advantage and give a better chance of winning.
How many PED’s are there?
Six.
What are the six main PED’s?
Anabolic Steroids Stimulants Diuretics Narcotics Beta Blockers HGH (Growth hormone)
What is the performance enhancing method used by performers?
Blood Doping (EPO)
What is Blood Doping/EPO?
The injection of oxygenated blood into an athlete before an event in an (illegal) attempt to enhance athletic performance.
Blood is taken out of the performer a few weeks before training/competition, frozen, then re-injected before the event.
What is the purpose of blood doping?
to increase red blood cells and oxygen delivery to the muscles.
What do anabolic steroids do?
- Increase muscle growth, mass and strength
- Quickens recovery
What are the side effects of anabolic steroids?
- Agression
- Mood swings
- Testicular Astrophy (shrinking of testicles)
What athletes may use anabolic steroids?
Sprinters or boxers
What do stimulants do?
- Increase alertness and energy
- Increased reaction time
What are the side effects of stimulants?
- Can effect sleep
- Diarrhoea
What athletes may use stimulants?
Sprinters or baseballers
What do diuretics do?
- Flushes excess water from the body
- Masks other drugs
What are the side effects of diuretics?
- Lose weight
- Dehydration (the body doesn’t get enough water)
