The brain Flashcards
Three interconnected layers of the brain
Cerebral cortex, central core and lambic system.
Where is the medulla
Central core
What does the medulla control
Autonomic nervous system, regulating the basic life processes of breathing and heart rate.
Where is the cerebellum
Central core
What does the cerebellum control
Coordination of movement, balance and posture
What is the cerebral cortex
The outer layer of the cerebrum. It is the centre of conscious thought. It also recalls memories and alters behaviour in the light of experience.
The cerebral cortex contains three types of functional area.
Association, sensory and motor
Actions of the sensory areas in the brain
Receive information as sensory impulses from the body’s receptors
Actions of association areas in the brain
Analyse and interpret the sensory impulses. Make sense of them and take decisions.
What are the actions of the motor areas in the brain
Receive information from the association areas and carry out the orders by sending motor impulses to appropriate effectors.
What four things are the association areas involved in.
Language processing, personality, imagination and intelligence
Why is each area of the brain linked together
Linked together through neural pathways to integrate all the incoming information and also the response
What is the corpus callosum
A large bundle of nerves which enables information to be exchanged between the hemispheres.
