Human Genomics Flashcards
What is human Genomics
the study of the human genome which involves sequencing DNA
What is a genome
An organisms entire hereditary information encoded in DNA
What is a genome composed of
Genes that code for proteins and other DNA sequences that do not code for proteins
What are computer programs used for in genomics
Used to identify base sequences by looking for sequences similar to known genes.
What is bioinformatics a fusion of
Molecular biology, statistical analysis and computer technology.
What do computer programs look for in order to identify gene sequences
Start sequences
Sequences lacking stop codons
Protein-coding sequences similar to known genes
What is personalised medicine
Analysis of an induviduals genome to determine the likelihood of developing certain diseases.
What is pharmocogenetics
The use of genome information in the choice of drugs. An individual’s genome sequence can help determine the most effective drugs and dosage to treat their disease (personalised medicine)
