Cellular respiration Flashcards
What is cellular respiration
A series of metabolic pathways that bring about the release of energy from a foodstuff and the regeneration of the high-energy compound, ADenosine triphosphate (ATP)
What is ATP used for
To transfer energy to cellular processes which require it.
What is phosphorylation
An enzyme-controlled process by which a phosphate group is added to a molecule.
What are the two stages of Glycolysis
Energy investment and energy pay-off
What do dehydrogenase enzymes do
Remove hydrogen ions and high energy electrons from molecules.
Where does glycolysis occur
Cytoplasm
Where does the citric acid cycle take place
Matrix of the mitochondria (The massive section in the middle)
What is the electron transport chain?
A series of carrier proteins attached to the inner mitochondrial membrane. it requires the presence of oxygen
What is oxygen known as
the final electron acceptor
