The blood Flashcards
what kind of tissue is the blood?
connective ! : so it contains cells and a matrix
what does blood do?
transports nutrients, waste products, hormones and even heat
protects body from injury and foreign invaders
what is blood separated into when placed in a centrifuge?
1) plasma- contains the matrix of blood (water, ions, urea, ammonia , proteins and other organic and inorganic compounds)
2) Buffy coat (WBC)
3) RBC
what are some important proteins in the plasma of blood?
albumin, immunoglobulins and clotting factors
what does albumin do?
regulate the osmotic pressure of blood.
transports fatty acids, steroids
what are erythrocytes?
red blood cells! - bags of hemoglobin, they have NO organelles, not even a nucleus. so they don’t reproduce
they transport 02 and C02
what are Leukocytes?
WBC - have organelles! protect body from invaders
what are the granular leukocytes?
BEN Basophils Eosinophils Neutrophils (62% of leukocytes) these live short period of time bc they are non specific towards foreign invaders! they multiply quickly and are gone once the infection is gone
what are the Agranular leukocytes?
MLM monocytes lymphocytes megakaryocytic these stick around for a Long time as they are specific for invaders
what are platelets?
small portions of membrane bound cytoplasm torn from megakaryocytes
what do platelets do when they come into contact with injured endothelium?
they become sticky and begin to swell and release chemicals and activate other platelets. they will stick to the endothelium and to each other and form a loose platelet plug
what are the three steps that occur during coagulation?
1) a dozen or so coagulation factors form a complex called prothrombin activator
2)prothrombin activator will catalyze conversion of prothrombin to thrombin
3) thrombin will convert fibrinogen to fibrin
fibrin will help form a tight plug
