A

1) plasma- contains the matrix of blood (water, ions, urea, ammonia , proteins and other organic and inorganic compounds)

A

red blood cells! - bags of hemoglobin, they have NO organelles, not even a nucleus. so they don’t reproduce

A

WBC - have organelles! protect body from invaders

these live short period of time bc they are non specific towards foreign invaders! they multiply quickly and are gone once the infection is gone

what are platelets?

A

small portions of membrane bound cytoplasm torn from megakaryocytes

what do platelets do when they come into contact with injured endothelium?

A

they become sticky and begin to swell and release chemicals and activate other platelets. they will stick to the endothelium and to each other and form a loose platelet plug

what are the three steps that occur during coagulation?

A

1) a dozen or so coagulation factors form a complex called prothrombin activator
2)prothrombin activator will catalyze conversion of prothrombin to thrombin
3) thrombin will convert fibrinogen to fibrin
fibrin will help form a tight plug
