Major hormones for the endocrine system Flashcards
What hormones are made by the anterior pituitary>?
hGH- growth of all cells
ACTH: stimulate the adrenal cortex
FSH: growth of follicles in females and sperm production in males
LH : causes ovulation, stimulate estrogen and testosterone secretion
TSH: stimulate release of T3 and T4 in the thyroid
Prolactin: promotes milk production
( ALL ARE WATER SOLUBLE)
What hormones are made by the posterior pituitary?
Oxotocin: milk ejection and uterine contraction
(water soluble)
ADH: water reabsorption by the kidneys, inc BP
(Water soluble)
What hormones are made by the adrenal cortex?
Aldosterone: reduce NA excretion and inc K excretion, raise BP
Cortisol : inc blood levels of carbs, proteins and fats
( BOTH LIPID SOL)
What hormones are made by the adrenal medulla?
Epinephrine: stimulate sympathetic actions
norepinephrine: stimulate sympathetic actions
( both water soluble)
What hormones are made by the thyroid?
T3, T4: inc the basal metabolic rate (LIPID SOL)
calcitonin: lowers blood calcium (WATER SOL)
Which hormones are made by the Parathyroid?
PH: raise blood calcium (water sol)
which hormone are made by the pancreas?
insulin: promotes glc entry into cells
glucagon: inc gluconeogenesis , inc glucose blood levels
(water sol)
which hormones are released by the ovaries?
estrogens: growth of female sex organs and it will cause LH surge
progesterones: prepares and maintains uterus for pregnancy
( both lipid soluble)
which hormone is produced by the testes?
testosterone: secondary sex characteristics, closing of the epiphyseal plate ( lipid soluble)
which hormones are made by the placenta?
HCG : stimulate corpus luteum to grow and release estrogen and progesterone
estrogens and progesterones
( HCG is water soluble but the estrogen and progesterone are lipid sol)
