the blood Flashcards
plasma
liquid part of the blood containing platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells
what does the plasma transport?
digestion products
(small intestine -> other organs)
CO2
(organs -> lungs)
urea
(liver -> lungs)
what do red blood cells transport
oxygen from the lungs to body cells
adaptations of red blood cells
haemoglobin:
binds to oxygen making oxyhaemoglobin, which is released in the organs as haemoglobin and oxygen
no nucleus:
more room for haemoglobin
biconcave disc (dimples in center):
greater surface area for oxygen to diffuse more rapidly
what do white blood cells do?
form part of the immune system like making antibodies
what is the key feature of white blood cells?
nucleus which contains DNA codes the instructions they need to do their job
platelets
tiny fragments of cells that help blood to clot
