mitosis and meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
meiosis halves ______, which then becomes _______
A
the number of chromosomes which then becomes full again in fertilisation
2
Q
meiosis stages
A
- chromosomes are all copied
- the cell divides into two
- both of these cells divide two more times forming the gametes
3
Q
mitosis stages
A
- the DNA replicates to form 2 copies of each chromosome
the cell grows and copies its organelles - one set of chromosomes is pulled to each pole of the cell, the nucleus divides too
- the cytoplasm and cell membrane form 2 identical cells
4
Q
what happens after fertilisation?
A
- the new cell divides by mitosis
- this produces a clump of identical cells (embryo)
- as it develops the cells differentiate forming different cell types
