Give a definition of atonement.
Atonement is the reconciliation between sinners and God that occurs when the sacrifice of Christ on the cross is applied to sinners.
Hebrews 2:9
Where did the plan of the atonement originate?
In the mind of God before the creation of the world.
What attributes of God moved Him to provide for the atonement? Explain from Scripture
God’s great love and the richness of His mercy (Ephesians 2)
What aspects of man’s condition made the atonement necessary?
Mankind is of incapable saving itself due to its depravity.

How could God justly put man’s sin upon an innocent victim?
God is just in all that he does, and Jesus lays his life down willingly.

What qualified Christ for being such an offering?

Could anyone other than Christ have made an acceptable offering?
No. The rest of of humanity is stained with sin.
Romans 3:23

What assurance do we have that the offering was acceptable to God?
Christ’s resurrection.
Romans 6:4. We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Can the atonement in any way be effective in human lives where the gospel is unknown?
General Revelation reveals God, but by itself is not enough.
A person must make an authentic confession, and people can’t call on what they haven’t heard (Rom. 10:12-14)
