Person of Jesus Christ Flashcards

1
Q

State some of the names referring to Christ (Messiah, Lord, Jesus, etc.) and explain their meanings.

A

Christ is the English rendering of the Greek “Christos” which is how the septuagint translated “Messiah” or “anointed one.” Both “Messiah” and “anointed one” refer to the appointment of and empowering of God for one who would be the deliverer for the people.
Declaring Jesus as Lord is also a declaration of His deity. The name, “LORD” (Yahweh), of the Hebrew Bible is used by the apostles to recognize the “Lord Jesus”, beginning with with Thomas’ exclamation when Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28).

Jesus is God incarnate and is given all authority in Heaven and earth by virtue of His death and resurrection. As such He is deserving of the Lordship ascribed to Him.

Q

Explain how the historic Christ was conscious of His divinity.

A

While the details of Christ’s consciousness is, historically, a subject of discussion and debate, it seems clear to me that Jesus had substantial understanding of His unique relationship with the Father (John 10), His mission in coming do earth (John 3:16), and the plan of the Father to resurrect and glorify Him. (John 2)

Q

How is the person of Christ dealt with in the Old Testament?

A

Jesus incarnation is foretold through prophecy and foreshadowed by His pre-incarnate appearances (Christophanies) as The Angel of The Lord and as Melchizedek. Like the prophecies, the Christophanies were intended to reinforce the reality that Jesus appears at the time He is needed to do what only He can do. (Hebrews 5)

Q

How may it be proved that Christ was really a man?

A

Evidence for Jesus’ life is found in ancient writings within a few decades of his lifetime. Jesus is mentioned by Jewish and Roman historians in passages that corroborate portions of the New Testament that describe His life and death. Claims about Jesus as a historical figure—a Jew, with followers, executed on orders of the Roman governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate, during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius—are also reflected by later source documents with a completely different set of biases from the biblical authors.

Q

How do you account for the fact that Christ had both a divine nature and human nature?

A

God became man. The “Word”/message/intent of God became flesh and entered time and space in the person of Jesus. In this mystery, Christ’s divine and human natures are joined in him in a personal unity traditionally referred to as the hypostatic union.

Q

Why are both natures essential to the person of Christ?.

A

Because Jesus is God, He is the only Savior of the World. We can worship and entrust our lives to Him. Because He is man, He has lived our struggles, known our fears, and experienced life as we have. He is not a distant, remote, and far-away God.
Also as a man, he brings restored life with God into the human experience. 1 Corinthians 15
