Person of God Flashcards
Give a biblical definition of “God.”
The Supreme One; the eternal and infinite spirit, the creator and ruler of the universe.
Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
What is the basis for the Christian belief that God is a person?
Genesis 1:26. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”
Explain the meaning of “holy” in reference to God and tell why it underlies all else in the character of God.
The Hebrew word for “holy” literally means “separate” or “set apart.” The main way God is understood as Holy is that He is separate from sin. This underlies all of His other characteristics because His holiness establishes that every aspect of His character is “good.”
Isaiah 6:2-3
Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
Explain the terms theism, deism, atheism, humanism.
Theism is belief in the existence of a god or gods, as creator(s) of the universe, intervening in it and sustaining a personal relation to his creatures.
Deism is the belief in a supreme being, specifically of a creator who does not intervene in the universe.
Atheism is belief that no God exists.
Humanism is the belief that humans and their concerns - rather than those of any diety - are of supreme importance in the universe.
What are some of the evidences and arguments for the existence of God both philosophically and biblically?
Cosmological argument: Nothing comes from nothing. Since the universe is something, there must be another something that caused it to be. There cannot be an infinite progression of causes, so there must be a first cause for the universe. This is God.
Psalm 19
Teleological arguments: Design requires a designer. There is great design in the universe, therefore, there must be a great Designer of the universe.
Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
Moral argument: There must be a universal moral law beyond mere convention or the law of nature. Therefore there must be a moral law giver outside of humankind or the natural world.
Romans 2:14 - 15 Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.
How does God maintain a relationship with his creatures?
The Bible describes God as our Father and we are His children. God relates to us in ways that are consistent with this imagery.
- Like a father, God communicates to His children.
Psalm 138:3 “When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” - Like a father, God cares for His children.
Isaiah 41:10. Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Matthew 6:26. “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” - Like a father, God corrects and guides His children.
Proverbs 3:11-12 “The Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”
Psalm 32.8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. “
What is your belief concerning God, creationism and evolution?
I believe God created the universe with the capacity to evolve and adapt.
Genesis 2:1-5
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground,
