Constituted Authority Flashcards
What is the Scriptural basis for the concept of “constituted authority” as understood in The Christian and Missionary Alliance?
Romans 13:1-5
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
If you should become personally involved in doctrines contrary to the “Statement of Faith of The Christian and Missionary Alliance,” what would you do?
Inform the District Office and elders and seek to open channels of discussion on the subject.
Ultimately, if the differences were irreconcilable, I would resign.
What difference is there in being led by the Spirit and being subject to recognized authority in the church?
I must seek to be led by the Spirit as I seek to lead and serve the church. If I conclude that the Spirit is leading me to resist the constituted authority over me, I feel I have an obligation to do two things:
1- Communicate what I am feeling led
2- Submit to the authority over me
Recognized authority in the church is one way that the Spirit leads. I am not where Louis King was when he said, “The call of the church is the call of God,” but one cannot ignore the call of the church in matters related to the church. At the same time, God uses various individuals to bring about change and growth in the body. I cannot assume God isn’t seeking to use me in this way if I am being prompted to speak out about something.
Humility and personal commitment to my leaders are the safeguards for me here.
Why is it important for the pastor to attend General Council and District Conference?
1- I am required to do so.
2- My vote is my voice on district matters.
3- Participation develops relationship and unity.
