the anatomy and memory of emotion Flashcards
What are the 2 types of short term memory
Working memory- attention dependant e.g. phone numbers
episodic memory- life events e.g. breakfast
What are the examples of the longer term memory
autobiographical- life events over longer time e.g. holiday when younger
semantic memory- facts & concepts
procedural- motor actions and skills e.g. driving
What is the functions of the hippocampus and where is it located
episodic memory and conscious recollection of these memories
spatial navigation and it is located in the inner surface of the temporal lobes
Outline the inputs and outputs to the hippocampus
inputs: from multiple of areas of cerebral cortex e.g. prefrontal, cingulate, temporal lobe, amygdala and olfactory bulbs
outputs: via subiculum to prefrontal cortex, amydala, mammillary bodies and ant thalamus and hypothalamus
fornix is the major output pathway
what are the consequences of damage to the hippocampus
amnesia, difficulties in spatial navigation and regulatory problems e.g. sleep
damage can be caused by
- hypoxia
- epilepsy
- neurodegenerative disorders
- infection, stress/depression
- schizophrenia
What is the main structure associated with emotion
and what are some of its functions
the amygdala, threat and fear detection
motivational behaviour: sex, aggression and feeding
emotional enhancement of memory
Where is the amydala located
medial temporal lobe anterior to hippocampus
What are the consequences of amydala damage
Lesions: loss/ absence of fear, abnormalities of social behaviour
psychiatry: anxiety disorders, PTSD, mood disorders
autism, personality disorders
What are the subcortical structures of emotion
striatum/ basal ganglia: habits and emotional expression
ventral striatum: reward, motivating and wanting
hypothalamus: stress responses
brainstem: arousal, expressions
