Q

Outline the inputs and outputs to the hippocampus

A

inputs: from multiple of areas of cerebral cortex e.g. prefrontal, cingulate, temporal lobe, amygdala and olfactory bulbs
outputs: via subiculum to prefrontal cortex, amydala, mammillary bodies and ant thalamus and hypothalamus

fornix is the major output pathway

Q

what are the consequences of damage to the hippocampus

A

amnesia, difficulties in spatial navigation and regulatory problems e.g. sleep

damage can be caused by

  • hypoxia
  • epilepsy
  • neurodegenerative disorders
  • infection, stress/depression
  • schizophrenia
