synaptic plasticity Flashcards
How can we classify memory
explicit and implicit memory,
explicit- facts and events
implicit-procedural (skills and habits), emotional responses.
How do we learn
The response of the brain to environmental events to involves events and involves adaptive changes in synaptic connectivity which will, in turn, alter behavior
Outline how memories are formed
There is a group of cells connected to each other called the cell assembly which represents an environmental stimulus internally e.g. a circle. When the stimulus is present these cells are activated and this activation lingers on after the stimulus is removed and Hebbian modification strengthens the reciprocal connections.
What are the two rules of synaptic modification
neurons that fire together wire together,
neurons that fire out of sync lose their link
