neural tissues Flashcards
What is the difference between afferent and efferent neurons
afferent neuron: transmits sensory information to the brain/spinal cord.
efferent neuron: motor neurons transmitting information from the brain to the effector organ i.e. muscle.
What is a ganglion
a group of cell bodies outside of the CNS
How can neurons be classified
by the number of “poles”, they have, multipolar, bipolar, and unipolar.
Name important neurons that you should know
pyramidal cells (neocortex), Purkinje cell (Cerebellum), dorsal root ganglion (sensory neuron)
how are glia different from neurons
they have no action potentials and do not form synapses, glia are able to divide and are common source of tumours of the NS. Glia are also responsible for forming the myelin sheath.
What is the role of the ependymal cell
They determine the fluid make up of the ventricular system
What is the role of astrocytes.
primarily responsible for supportive functions and controls blood vessels
What is the role of oligodendrocytes
they are responsible for the formation of myelin sheath in the CNS
What is the role of microglia
They are immune cells and protect neurons from diesease and they migrate to injury sites and can engulf microbes.
What is the role of the schwann cells
production and maintenance of the myelin sheath and PNS regeneration. 1 schwann cell per axon.
What is the role of satelite cells
support neurons and regulate exchange between neurons and interstitial fluid.
What are some neural pathologies
glioma, neuroblastoma
