The Advantages and Disadvantages of Oil Flashcards
Advantage: Abundant
It is the most abundant source of energy that we have
Advantage: Simple to extract
The extraction of Oil is a relatively simple process and doesn’t require any new technology, which makes it not too expensive in comparison to other energy sources.
Advantage: Liquid=easy to transport
Oil is a liquid. This makes it easy to transport, whether that’s by pipeline or by tanker.
Advantage: Expansion of easy to transport (example of a pipeline)
The forties pipeline system is a major pipeline transport network in the North Sea
Advantage: Easily stored, effective at meeting energy demands (give an example too!!)
Oil can be easily stored, meaning it can provide power quickly and is therefore effective at meeting energy demands during peak times, especially early evenings e.g. Sullum Voe.
Disadvantage: Oil reserves are very low
Oil reserves are at the lower they’ve ever been. There’s only about 47 years left.
Disadvantage: Oil spills
Extracting oil could cause oil spills. These can cause temporary reduction in supply.
Disadvantage: Increased cost in exploring and extracting
An increased cost in exploring and extracting remaining oil will result in higher energy bills.
Disadvantage: Subject to International price change
Oil is subject to international price change and are vulnerable to political, economic and military pressures.
Disadvantage: countries moving away from using it
Countries are moving away from using oil due to their commitments they made in the Paris Agreement
Disadvantage: Finite source
Fossils fuels are finite and once used up they can’t be replaced.
