Impacts of Climate Change Flashcards
What are sea levels rising as a result of?
Sea levels are rising as a result of the thermal expansion of
oceans and the melting of glaciers and land-based ice caps.
How do these rising sea levels impact low lying costal areas?
Low-lying coastal areas are flooding, for example, Bangladesh.
How do refugees moving to higher ground and/or other countries negatively impact these areas?
There is a large displacement of people as they move to higher land
which puts pressure on resources such as housing, water and
power supplies in host countries.
What does flooding do? (cause damage to..)
Flooding causes damage to properties as well as a loss of farmland
Rising sea temperatures: coral bleaching
Sea temperatures are rising, which results in coral bleaching when algae is expelled
What does Coral Bleaching result in?
Coral bleaching results in a loss of shelter from predators and a loss of a food source
Rising sea temperatures: Hurricanes
Rising sea temperatures also result in an increase in frequency and severity of hurricanes.
How does more intense and frequent storms cause an increase in the cost of rebuilding?
As hurricanes become more powerful and more frequent, more damage will be done to affected areas, causing an increased cost of rebuilding after storms
Rising land temperatures: wildfires
Rising land temperatures cause prolonged periods of drought. This means there will be more wildfires.
Example of Wildfire (Aussie)
An example of a wildfire are the Australian bush fires which destroy habitats, leading to the extinction of species
Rising land temperatures: increase in vector borne diseases
Rising land temperatures cause an increase in vector borne diseases.
How does this increase in disease affect places such as Africa?
40 million more people in Africa are at risk of contracting malaria
