Changed in Energy Demand in Developing Countries (Middle and Low income) Flashcards
Population: Increasing Population
An increase in population leads to increased demands for electricity for lighting and appliances such as televisions.
Population: Increasing demand in food
A higher demand for food means that fertilisers and pesticides are used to increase food production (1). However, producing fertilisers and pesticides uses a lot of energy (1).
Population: Urbanisation= more houses needing to be built.
Many people in developing countries are moving into cities. This urbanisation process requires a lot of concrete to build new houses and concrete uses a lot of energy.
Economic Growth: New Infrastructure
Most global economic growth is happening in developing countries such as China which requires a lot of energy to build new infrastructure.
Economic Growth: Increased Car Ownership
As developing countries are becoming more wealthy, car ownership rates will also increase and therefore so will the demand for fuel
Economic Growth: Shipping products around the world
In a global economy, many of the manufactured products are sold to developed countries and therefore need to be shipped around the world- using more energy.
Economic Growth: Non-Industrialised African nations (contrast to shipping point)
However, many African nations have not industrialised as much as in Asia, leading to a smaller rise in energy demand here
Transport: Increase in passenger air travel
People are more likely to travel abroad for business or holidays. This has caused a large increase in passenger air travel, with Asia in particular constructing a large number of airport terminals
