Energy Production (across the world) Flashcards
Why are countries close to the Equator (e.g Kenya) suitable for solar energy?
Countries close to the equator (1) have high pressure much of the
year (1) results in clear skies and long hours sunshine which is ideal
for solar energy (1).
Why is Scotland suitable for wind energy?: Low pressure
Scotland experiences low pressure (1) which is associated with high
winds which can be used to generate power (1) especially in exposed upland areas (1).
Why is Scotland suitable for wind energy?: Large coastline
Scotland has a large coastline which allows for uninterrupted air flow (1).
Why are countries in the middle east suited to using oil as their way to produce energy?
Middle Eastern countries generate their electricity from oil as they
have natural reserves (1) and infrastructure for oil extraction is
already in place (1).
Why does France use nuclear energy? (no reserves and no earthquakes)
France has limited fossil fuel reserves and have invested in nuclear
energy (1) as a peaceful stable country, it is safe to have nuclear
power stations (1).
Why are areas that have a rainforest climate, such as Brazil, suited to hydro-electric power? (amazon river)
The tropical rainforest climate in Brazil means that there is a consistently high amount of precipitation for hydro-electric power; as well as major rivers that can be used. (Amazon river)
Why are countries that are at plate boundaries, such as Iceland, suited to Geothermal energy? (Think of this as the Laufey point!!)
Iceland has the largest amount of geothermal energy because it is at a plate boundary where the heat of magma is closer t the surface and so can be harnessed efficiently.
