Textiles 2 Flashcards
what is a selvedge
the edge of of a woven piece of fabric, where the weft yarns wrap around warp yarns
Plain weave characteristics
- Simplest weave
- Unpatterned
- Hard wearing
- Smooth finish, easy to print on
- Strong, holds its shape well
- cheapest fabric, used to make many fabrics such as cotton- based ones
How are fabrics woven
- using looms, small looms to produce small pieces, industrial looms used to make bigger ones and are computer operated
Weft- knitted fabrics characteristics and uses
- yarn rubs across fabric in loops, making interlocking loops with the row of yarn beneath
- stretch, can lose shape easily
- can be hand or machine operated
- used for jumpers, socks, t - shirts
- if yarn breaks, it can unravel and make a ladder
Warp- knitted fabrics characteristics and uses
- yarn runs up fabric in loops which interlock vertically
- stretchy but CAN keep their shape
- hard to unravel, less likely to ladder
- machine - made, can be expensive
- Used for tights, some bed sheets, swimwear
What are bonded fabrics
“webs” of synthetic fibres which are glued, needle- punched, stitched or melted together
Bonded fabrics uses
- used for interfacing (Putting in between layers of fabric for thickness) , artificial leathers and disposable cloths e.g. medical masks
What is felting fabrics
a mechanical process which involves melting together wood or synthetic fibres using a combination of heat, pressure, movement and moisture to mesh fibres in random way
Felted fabrics uses
Used in hats, carpets
- no elasticity, call pull apart easily
How can fibres be combined
By blending or mixing
What is blending fabrics
when two or more different fibres are combined to produce a yarn,
this yarn is then woven or knitted to make a blended fabric
What is mixing fabrics
when a fabric is made up of two or more different types of yarn
the two different types of yarn can then be knitted or woven together to make a mixed fabric
