What is a system
a collection of parts which work together to do a particular function
what are electronic systems made up of
components which are connected to form a circuit
what is a system made up of
3 “blocks” input, process, output
what is a signal
e.g. electricity, light, movement which passes from one block to another
what are circuits made up of
components joined together by wires
What are PCBs ( Printed circuit boards)
boards with thin copper tracks ( instead of wires) connecting components in circuit
- used to reduce the size and manufacturing cost of electronic system
Why do materials used in a circuit have to be conductors?
because they need to let electricity flow through them
what does voltage do
pushes electric current around the circuit
what do resistors do
They reduce the current in a circuit in a circuit so that you don’t damage delicate components like a light bulb
how do systems work
input devices receive an external signal, triggering it to work
what are sensors
components that convert a specific type of energy into an electrical signal
what does a switch do
completes a circuit allowing current to flow
different types of switches
toggle switch
push switch, to complete or break the circuit
slide switch
what do variable resistors do
change the resistance of the circuit based on an external factor such as temperature
- this alters the current in wires, which gets passed to the process block
types of variable resistors
thermistors ( hot conditions, resistance falls)
LDR ( brighter light, resistance falls)
Pressure sensors (could detect a leak in a car where gases and liquids are monitored)
