Properties of materials Flashcards
define working properties
materials which respond to use in a certain environment or in a certain way- e .g- something with become hot when heated
define material properties
characteristics of a material, what it’s good at doing
define physical properties
a property which is an inherent property of a material, it is what it is naturally, e .g- a metal can naturally conduct electricity
Examples of physical properties
- absorbency
-fusibility
-density
What is absorbency? + Examples
the tendency to attract or take an element, usually a liquid such as water, e.g.- sponge
What is density?+ examples
how compact a material is; the mass per unit of volume of a material
What is fusibility? +Examples
the ability of a material to be converted from a solid to liquid using heat
- solder has a high fusibility
What is strength?
- the ability of a material to withstand force without breaking
What is elasticity
- the ability of a material to stretch and bend and then be able to return to its normal shape
what is toughness
- the ability of a material to absorb energy through shock without breaking
e.g. wood
what is malleability
the ability of a material to be shaped without breaking
what is ductility
the ability of a material to be drawn into wires without breaking
what is hardness
the ability of a material to resist scratches and indentations, it doesn’t dent
other properties of absorbent materials
- can be dyed easily
- dry slower
- vulnerable to stains
