Paper and board Flashcards
What are paper and card made from
wood pulp and paper mills
Cartridge paper properties and uses
-high quality
- textured surfaces
- good for sketching with pencils, crayons, ink or watercolour
-120-150 gsm
Layout paper properties and uses
- Thin
-Translucent ( decreases and gsm increases)
-Used for general design work, especially sketching ideas
-40-60 gsm
Grid paper properties and uses
- may have a square or isometric pattern printed on it
- useful for scale drawings / mathematical drawings
-80 gsm
Tracing paper properties and uses
- semi transparent
-used to copy images
-40 - 120 gsm
-takes pencil well
Bleed proof paper properties and uses
- slightly textured
- 70gsm
- used by designers when using felt tips and marker pens because the ink doesn’t spread out ( bleed ) - it stays put
what does textured mean
having a rough or uneven surface or consistency
when does paper become board
when it becomes over 200 gsm (grams per square metre)
Why is board often used in packaging
- low cost compared to other packaging materials
- high strength to weight ratio
Solid white board properties and uses
- high quality bleached surface
-used for primary packaging (packaging for individual items) - used for greeting cards
Inkjet card properties and uses
- used for inkjet printing
- ink doesn’t bleed, allowing printed image to be sharply defined and of high quality
Corrugated card properties and uses
- strong
- lightweight
-used in (secondary) packaging boxes - easily printed on
Duplex board properties and uses
- different colour and texture on both sides
- used where only one surface is seen, only one side needs to be seen
- used in food packaging
Foam core board
- stiff
-lightweight - can crease under pressure
- good for making models, framing of photographs
Foil lined board properties and uses
- reflective
- has an aluminium foil lining
- foil keeps flavour in and air and moisture out, oil
resistant - used in takeaway containers to keep heat in for longer
what is primary packaging
packaging for individual items
what is secondary packaging
packaging used to contain lots of the same item
what does it mean when paper bleeds
it spreads out
how is aper made
Wood pulp is obtained by cutting down trees and breaking down the wood. The bark and chippings are then removed and ground down or cooked with chemicals to extract the cellulose fibres.
