Product analysis Flashcards
why do designers analyse other products
to see how successful they have been
- to identify any areas which can be improved
- to give you ideas on what to use in your own designs
why should function be considered when analysing a product
- to see if the product does it’s job properly
- ## diassembling (taking apart) a product helps you find out how it works
why should form be considered when analysing a product
- to look at the shape and look of the product (aesthetics)
why should ergonomics be considered when analysing a product
- to make sure it is safe and the size and proportions fit the users needs
why should competition and cost be considered during product analysis
to consider whether the product is a value for money
to look at how the product performs compared to other similar products
why should sustainability be considered during product analysis
to consider how much making or using the product may affect the environment
why should materials and manufacture be considered during product analysis
- to look at why those particular materials were chosen
- to consider all the processes that have been used to make the product
why is it important to record the findings of your analysis
so that you can remember your thoughts, and compare it with other products
how can you record your data
using a spreadsheet
what is an evaluation
a judgement about what does and doesn’t work about the product, and how effective the different features are
why does it matter what materials are used in a product
- some materials are toxic
- some materials are made from finite resources (plastics made from synthetic fibres) which’ll eventually run out
- products made from recyclable materials more environmentally frienly
Why should you think about processes used to make the product
- does the process cause pollution?
- how much waste material will the product produce and how will it be disposed of?
- does the process use a lot of energy?
- was the product made under good working conditions?
what is the aim of fairtrade
to make sure producers get paid FAIRLY
What environmental standards do fairtrade producers provide
- reducing use of pesticides
- reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- protecting biodiversity
what social standards do fairtrade producers provide
- fair terms of trade (meaning higher prices) so that small scale farmers and workers can earn a better income so they can afford to feed their famillies
- safer working conditions for farmers and workers
- fairtrade premium - money for farmers and workers to help their communities in an area they wish to improve, like a school
