precautions
impaired hepatic or renal function
drug interactions
calcium or iron supplements, laxatives wtih magnesium, and antacids reduce PO absorption and serum levels
decrease oral contraceptive effectiveness
dairy products affect absorption
increased anticoagulant efffect of warfarin
adverse effects
DISCOLORATION of TEETH; superinfections, nausea, vomit, epigastric burning, diarrhea, photosensitivity, can worsen preexisting kidney impairment
serious adverse effects
anaphylaxis, fatty degeneration of the liver; exfoliative dermatitis
responsibilities
administer with full glass of water on empty stomach
do not give before sleep
report sudden onset of pain or dysphagia or diarrhea, monitor for superinfections; report headache or visual disturbance
teaching
use good oral and skin care
protect eyes, nose and mouth from topicals
skin may look yellow to fluorescent green under UV/black lights
no antacids, calcium supplements, iron products and laxatives with magnesium
sunglasses, sunscreen when outside
no breast feeding and report pregnancy
