Test 36 Flashcards
Developmental milestones
Adopted or biological children of gay and lesbian parents generally experience normal development. Compared with children of heterosexual parents, they are not more likely to develop behavioral problems, depression, gay/lesbian orientation, or gender dysphoria.
Patient confidentiality
A physician may reveal or share a patient’s protected health information (obstetric history) to family members only if the patient is present (or otherwise available prior to the disclosure), has capacity, and gives permission.
Obesity
Focus on the common causes of common medical conditions. Obesity in children and adults most often result from overeating, and not from endocrinologic disorders like hypothyroidism or Cushing disease.
Kyphosis
Postural kyphosis, or slouching, is a common finding in adolescents; it is easily correctable by voluntary back extension and requires no treatment. In contrast, structural kyphosis is due to underlying spinal pathology and does not self-correct.
Confounding, effect modification, bias, errors
Effect modification results when an external variable has a positive or negative impact on the observed effect of a risk factor on disease status. Stratification can help detect effect modification. Separate measures of outcome should be reported for each level of an effect modifier.
Seizures
Nonadherence to medications is a major cause of breakthrough seizures in patients with epilepsy. Prompt measurement of serum antiepileptic drug concentrations is an important part of the initial workup for these patients.
Case control studies
A case-control study is the most appropriate study design to investigate an outbreak of an acute infectious disease. It generally allows for quick localization of the outbreak source.
Coma
A normal reaction to caloric stimulation of the external auditory canal strongly suggests psychogenic coma.
