Test 26 Flashcards
Abortion
A subchorionic hematoma is an abnormal collection of blood between the uterus and the gestational sac. It can present with first-trimester bleeding or as an incidental finding on route on US. Management is expectant; serial US can be performed to provide reassurance.
Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepine withdrawal occurs with abrupt cessation after prolonged use and may occur several days into a hospitalization. Rapid tx with a bdz is needed to manage this potentially life-threatening condition.
Hair loss
Alopecia areata is characterized by smooth and discrete areas of complete hair loss. There is no associated scaling, scarring, or inflammation.
Hair loss
Alopecia areata can commonly recurr in patients even after successful tx and normal hair growth.
Hair loss
Topical or intralesional corticosteroids are the preferred first-line tx in patients with alopecia areata.
Idiopathic intracranial HTN
Idiopathic intracranial HTN, also known as pseudotumor cerebri, is a potential cause of headaches typically seen in overweight women of childbearing age. Papilledema is classically seen on ophthalmoscopic examination. A negative neuroimaging study (except an empty sella) and an elevated opening pressure on LP can help to confirm the dx.
Myocardial infarction
Beta blockers reduce short-term morbidity (recurrent symptoms or reinfarction) and improve long-term survival in patients with prior MI and/or left ventricular systolic dysfunction, and are an integral part of pharmacotherapy for secondary prevention of cardiovascular events following MI.
