Test #3: Assisted Reproduction Flashcards
what are the 4 types of assisted reproduction?
Hormonal treatments
Artificial insemination
In Vitro Fertilization
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection
Hormonal treatments:
Taking some hormone-based drugs to correct infertility by triggering ovulation.
Artificial insemination:
The introduction of spermatozoa directly into the women’s uterus. This treatment is done during ovulation and requires the use of a catheter (a very fine tube).
In Vitro Fertilization:
Treatment where the ova are fertilized by spermatozoa in the laboratory. The embryos obtained are then transplanted in the woman’s uterus, where they continue their development. This treatment is recommended when artificial insemination attempts have failed or when the fallopian tubes are blocked.
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection:
This treatment involves forcing the spermatozoa into the ovum. This technique is used when there are not enough sperm cells available for fertilization. The ova are collected, the spermatozoa and ova are then inserted into the ovum using microscopic tools. Embryos are then implanted into the woman’s uterus in the same way as they use in vitro fertilization.
