Nasal Cavities:

A
  • Air goes through nostrils –> enter the nasal cavities
  • Small hairs called cilia, filter dust particles
  • Small blood vessels to warm the air and mucous to moisten the air.

Pharynx:

  • Part of respiratory and digestive system

Larynx:

A
  • Made mostly of cartilage
  • Connects pharynx to trachea
  • Epiglottis shuts opening of trachea during swallowing and allows food to go through esophagus.
  • Trachea contains vocal cords, vibrate when exhale to produce sound.

  • Tube connects larynx to bronchi
  • Located in front of esophagus
  • Made of rings of cartilage –> keep open at all times and give it strength.
  • Lined with mucous and cilia to push dust particles towards mouth and away from lungs.

Bronchi:

A
  • Trachea splits into 2 bronchi; one tube towards left lung and other towards right lung.
  • Made of cartilage, cilia and mucous

Bronchioles:

A
  • Bronchi divide into smaller tubes.

- Each bronchiole ends in a cluster of aveoli.

Aveoli:

A
  • Small bags surrounded by capillaries
  • Aveoli and capillary membranes are so thin, they allow certain substances to pass through.
  • Capillaries = tiny blood vessels whose membrane is made up of only one row of cells.
