Test#1: term 2: Respiratory system, sec 3 Flashcards
1
Q
Anatomy of the respiratory system:
A
- Nasal Cavities
- Pharynx
- Larynx
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli
2
Q
Nasal Cavities:
A
- Air goes through nostrils –> enter the nasal cavities
- Small hairs called cilia, filter dust particles
- Small blood vessels to warm the air and mucous to moisten the air.
3
Q
Pharynx:
A
- Part of respiratory and digestive system
- Food and air passes through
4
Q
Larynx:
A
- Made mostly of cartilage
- Connects pharynx to trachea
- Epiglottis shuts opening of trachea during swallowing and allows food to go through esophagus.
- Trachea contains vocal cords, vibrate when exhale to produce sound.
5
Q
Trachea:
A
- Tube connects larynx to bronchi
- Located in front of esophagus
- Made of rings of cartilage –> keep open at all times and give it strength.
- Lined with mucous and cilia to push dust particles towards mouth and away from lungs.
6
Q
Bronchi:
A
- Trachea splits into 2 bronchi; one tube towards left lung and other towards right lung.
- Made of cartilage, cilia and mucous
7
Q
Bronchioles:
A
- Bronchi divide into smaller tubes.
- Each bronchiole ends in a cluster of aveoli.
8
Q
Aveoli:
A
- Small bags surrounded by capillaries
- Aveoli and capillary membranes are so thin, they allow certain substances to pass through.
- Capillaries = tiny blood vessels whose membrane is made up of only one row of cells.
