Test 2: 24 monitoring O2 Flashcards
— changes color when bound to O2
hemoglobin
benifits of pulseoximetry
continuous
non invasive
easy to use
cons of pulse ox
sensitive to movement
does work if too pigmented
if animal too anemic not accurate
how does pulseox work
sends out two wavelengths of light (bright red and dark red), then senor measures light that made it through → gives ratio of oxygenated and unoxygenated blood
can see pulsing of arteries and measures the oxygenation in the pulsating part to give you measure of O2 saturation in ateries
if HR on EKG and HR on pulseox are different what will happen to O2
will be falsely low- measuring O2 not in arteries
pulseox
vasocontriction
shock or xylazine
can not see pulse
how does blood gas machine measure SpO2
it calculates it from the PaO2
uses sigmoid curve- can shift and change with species
can be shifted from temperature
