Terms of Motion Flashcards
movement which decreases the angle between two body parts
flexion
movement that increases the angle between two body parts
extension
upward motion of foot towards your tibia (flex your foot)
dorsiflexion
downward motion of foot away from your lower leg (point your toes)
plantar flexion
upward (superior) movement of a body part
elevation
downward (inferior) movement of a body part
depression
movement where the sole of the foot is rolled outward
eversion
movement where the sole of the foot is rolled inward
inversion
body segment’s rotational motion where the end of the segment traces a circle
circumduction
rotating the wrist to the thumb (or radial bone) side
radial deviation
rotating the wrist to the little finger (or ulnar side)
ulnar deviation
body part moves away from the midline
abduction
body parts moves towards the midline
adduction
outward (lateral) rotation of a body segment away from the midline (rotate leg out)
lateral rotation
inward (medial) rotation of a body segment towards the midline (rotate leg in)
medial rotation
medial rotation of the forearm (palm down)
pronation
lateral rotation of the forearm (palm up)
supination
backward movement of a body segment past anatomical position in the sagittal plane
retraction
forward movement of a body segment away from anatomical position in the sagittal plane
protraction
bending movement of a body part in the lateral direction i.e. sideways, concerns mainly torso or neck, can be right or left (oblique stretches)
lateral flexion
extension past the normal anatomical position
hyperextension
thumb movement that brings the tip of the thumb in contact with the tip of a figner
opposition
