Cells Flashcards
Extracellular Space
space between cells
Extracellular fluid (in the extracellular space)
mostly water
Extracellular matrix (in the extracellular space)
solid or gel-like materials (lots of collagen) that hold body together
Prokaryotes
single-celled organisms, lack nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
Eukaryotes
single celled or multi-celled, contain nucleus and organelles
(all human cells are eukaryotic)
Cell Differentiation
a cell “growing up” and “deciding” what it wants to be; a complex process; are cells that are “all grown up”
Most cells are derived from?
Zygote- formed when a mother’s egg meets a father’s sperm
Cells that undergo self-renewal; divide into two cells: one goes on to “grow up” and the other remains a stem cell
stem cells
Grow up to become anything; only truly exist in zygotes/very early in development
Totipotent stem cells
grow up to become several things, but not all things; there are many pluripotent cells in a full grown body
Pluripotent cells
no longer stem cells- they do not self renew (although some still divide), but can still become many different things when they grow up
progenitor cells
