Tendon problems Flashcards
how common are tendon related problems
30% of MSK consults
what does tenosynovitis and tendonitis mean
tenosynovitis = inflammation of the tendon and it's sheath tendonitis = inflammation of the tendon
what does tendinopathy or tendonosis refer to
general terms for tendon damage/disease
what does enthesopathy mean
disorder of the muscular or tendinous attachment to the bone
what are some intrinsic causes of tendonopathy
increasing age, obesity, gender, pre-disposing diseases, anatomical factors
give an example of a pre-disposing condition to tendinopathy
rheumatoid arthritis
give some examples of anatomical factors that can cause tendinopathy
mal-alignment, leg length discrepancy, hyperpronation
what are some of the extrinsic causes of tendinopathy
trauma/injury, repetitive injury, drugs, sports related causes
what drugs are associated with development of tendinopathy
steroids, some specific antibodies
what pathology is seen with tendonosis
histologic degeneration of collagen and extracellular matrix
what is the likely pathophysiology to tendonosis
likely due to matrix metalloproteinases, which increase with age + repetitive strain
(can be present and cause no problems)
what types of conservative management can be used for tendinopathies
rest, physio, analgesics, injections, splinting
what tendinopathies are injections often used for
tennis elbow and rotator cuff problems
what tendinopathies are injections NOT to be used in
achilles tendon and extensor knee mechanism problems
due to risk of rupture
what conservative management can be used for achilles tendon problems
splints and casting
