Tendinopathy Flashcards
1
Q
What is tendinopathy?
A
An imbalance in the wear and repair process leading to a loss of tendon homeostasis. Clinical presentation of pain.
2
Q
How does tendinopathy occur?
A
WEAR: Training load Previous muscle injury Muscle weakness LL biomechanics
REPAIR: Tendon structure Increased BMI Age/Gender Meds Genetic predisposition
3
Q
Structural change with tendinopathy
A
- Alterations to tendon cell population (overload detected by cells)
- Disorganisation of collagen (cells activate)
- Ground substance changes (matrix loses structure)
- Neovascularisation (new blood vessels and nerves enter area causing pain)
4
Q
How to Rx tendinopathy
A
- Reduce external loading - progressive loading is the key to recovery!
- DTFM
- SSTM?
- Lifestyle changes
- Increase muscle strength
