What are the red flags?
A
- Cauda equina (loss of sensation - can’t tell when they need the toilet, also loss of sensory)
- Bladder and bowl dysfunction
- Saddle anaesthesia
- Motor weakness
- Back pain onset: age <20 >55
- Violent trauma
- New pain
- Constant pain
- Night pain
- History of cancer
- Drugs, HIV
- Weight loss
- Wide spread neurology
- Plantar responses (+Babinksi = Upper MN lesion)

What are the yellow flags?
A
Attitude and beliefs Behaviour Compensation Diagnosis and treatment Emotion Family Work
Psychosocial factors - fear avoidance (dysfunctional interpretation of pain), pain behaviours (bracing, rubbing, noises, guarding), catastrophising (abnormally severe and maladaptive)

- BP, RR, HR, resp signs and symptoms

- Any other investigations (x-ray, CT/MRI, blood test)
- Steroids

What is a yellow flag?
A
Indicators of developing a chronic condition/persistent pain from an acute problem.

A
Warning signs and symptoms that indicate the possible presence of a serious pathology.

What are the 5 D’s?
A
Dysphagia (difficultly swallowing) Dysphasia (difficulty talking) Dyplopia (double vision) Drop Attacks Dizziness
