What are the red flags?

A
  • Cauda equina (loss of sensation - can’t tell when they need the toilet, also loss of sensory)
  • Bladder and bowl dysfunction
  • Saddle anaesthesia
  • Motor weakness
  • Back pain onset: age <20 >55
  • Violent trauma
  • New pain
  • Constant pain
  • Night pain
  • History of cancer
  • Drugs, HIV
  • Weight loss
  • Wide spread neurology
  • Plantar responses (+Babinksi = Upper MN lesion)

Psychosocial factors - fear avoidance (dysfunctional interpretation of pain), pain behaviours (bracing, rubbing, noises, guarding), catastrophising (abnormally severe and maladaptive)
