  2. Breakdown of articular cartilage
  3. Fibrillation
  4. Fissures
  5. Gross ulceration
  6. Osteophyte formation
  7. Thickening of subchondral bone
  8. Synovial membrane changes

Clinical features

A
  • Pain on movement/weight bearing
  • Pain around joint - burning, sharp ache, worse with activity
  • Stiffness (usually in the morning and at night)
  • Loss of ROM (on PROM)
  • Change in gait (LL)

Treatment of OA

A

(Depends on severity)

  • Mobilisations for pain and stiffness
  • Strengthening (muscles)
  • AROM and PROM
  • Exercises
  • Lifestyle/weight loss
  • Surgery
  • NSAIDs
