What is OA?
A
- Clinical presentation of joint pain

A
- Disappearance of articular surfaces
- Breakdown of articular cartilage
- Fibrillation
- Fissures
- Gross ulceration
- Osteophyte formation
- Thickening of subchondral bone
- Synovial membrane changes

Clinical features
A
- Pain on movement/weight bearing
- Pain around joint - burning, sharp ache, worse with activity
- Stiffness (usually in the morning and at night)
- Loss of ROM (on PROM)
- Change in gait (LL)

Treatment of OA
A
(Depends on severity)
- Mobilisations for pain and stiffness
- Strengthening (muscles)
- AROM and PROM
- Exercises
- Lifestyle/weight loss
- Surgery
- NSAIDs

Risk factors for OA
A
Age - long periods of wear
Inflammation - increased catabolism and decreased anabolism
Joint injury/previous injury - causes inflammation
Mechanical stress
Obesity
