Temporal Bone Flashcards
Where is the parietal margin
Along the top of the squamous part
Where is the sphenoidal margin
Under the zygomatic ridge where it would fuse with the sphenoid bone
Where is the occipital margin
Posterior to the auditory meatus
Where is the petrous part
Protuberance in the medial view
Where is the petrous crest
Notch above the petrous part before the sphenoidal margin
Where is the external acoustic meatus
Big hole in the exocranial view next to mastoid
Where is the zygomatic process
This projection of bone which begins to form the zygomatic arch
Where is the suprameatal crest
Superior roof of the zygomatic process
Where is the supramastoid crest
This is the posterior extension of the suprameatal crest past the EAM
Where is the parietal notch
This is formed in-between the parietal and occipital margin
Where is the mastoid process
The rough external surface posterior to the EAM
Where are the mastoid foramen
Located near the posterior edge on the exocranial side
Where is the mastoid notch
This is a furrow medial to the mastoid process
Where is the occipital groove
Medial to the mastoid notch is a shallow furrow for the occipital artery - smaller than the notch
Which is the squamous part
Big flat area of bone
Where is the articular eminence
Under the zygomatic arch flat surface next to the mandibular fossa
Where is the mandibular fossa
Fossa next to the articular eminence, fairly big next to EAM
Where is the postglenoid process
Small projection under the EAM near to the styloid process
Where is the entoglenoid process
This is the inferior projection of the articular surface at the medial edge of the articular eminence
Where is the tympanic part
This is the anterior surface which forms the rear wall of the mandibular fossa
Where is the styloid process
This is the thin pointed bony rod that points from the base of the temporal bone - usually broken or missing
Where is the stylomastoid foramen
Located posterior to the base of the styloid process
Where is the vaginal process
Ensheaths the base of the styloid process
Where is the jugular fossa
Located medial to the base of the styloid process - big
Where is the carotid canal
A large circular canal, medial to the styloid process next to the jugular fossa
Where are the middle meningeal grooves
Narrow well defined grooves on the endrocranial surface
Where is the internal auditory meatus
Located midway along the petrous part
Where is the sigmoid sulcus
Large curving groove at the posterior base of the petrous part
Where is the squamotympanic fissure
Under the mandibular fossa
Where is the sub arcuate fossa
This is the small hole next to the internal auditory meatus
Where is the opening for the aequeductos vestibuli
It is the ‘fold’ of bone along from the internal auditory meatus
Where is the groove for the sigmoid sinus
This is superior to the petrous part on the side of the occipital margin
Where is the tymponomastoid fissure
Runs under the EAM, in-between the styloid process and mastoid process
Where is the articular tubercle
This is the small bump before the zygomatic arch
How would you side the temporal bone
The mastoid tip is inferior, the zygomatic arch projects anteriorly, the parietal margin is superior
