Middle ear bones Flashcards
How many bones are there
3
What are the three bones
Malleus, Incus and Stapes
What are some good uses of these bones
They preserve very well, are full size at birth, can be sexually dimorphic and can be used for dna
How would you identify the malleus
The malleus has a round head and a diagonal projecting point known as the handle
How would you side the malleus
Most of the time they are directly taken from their side but if not, lay the bone down with the head away from you and the facet up the process on top of the handle points towards its side the the bottom of the handle is opposite
How would you identify the Incus
This is the mini pubis looking one, squarer body with inferior projection
How would you side the Incus
Most of the time they are directly taken from their side but if not, hold the bone with the facet towards you and the longest point facing down. the long process bends towards its side at the top and again at the very bottom point
How would you identify the stapes
This is the smallest one and is a horseshoe shape
How would you side the stapes
Most of the time they are directly taken from their side but if not, the longer more curved side is posterior whereas the shorter straighter one is anterior
