Sphenoid Bone Flashcards
Where is the body of the sphenoid
central midline area
Which are the lesser wings
These are the smaller thin posterior projections from the body
Which are the greater wings
These are attached to the body and they project laterally
Where is the frontal margin of the greater wing
These are the very top edges of the greater wing
Where is the parietal margin of the greater wing
Top superior edges of the greater wings
Where is the squamous margin of the greater wing
These are the big curved angle of the greater wing
Where would BOBBS be located
This would be on the inferior base of the sphenoid
Where are the optic canals
Either side of the body, anterior to the lesser wings kind of under them
Where is the sella Turcica (Turkish saddle)
The saddle shaped depression on the endocranial surface, onto of the body
Where is the hypophyseal fossa
Deepest depression on the sella hold the pituitary gland
Where is the dorsum sellae
This is the square plate of bone which forms the posterior boundary of the sella turcica
Where is the posterior chinois process
These are the two tubercles located at the superolateral corners of the dorsum sellae
Where is the Clivus
The slight endrocranial hollow posterior from the dorsum sellae
Where is the sphenoidal sinuses
Large hollows within the body of the sphenoid
Where is the sphenoidal rostrum
This is the midline bony projection on the anterior surface of the body of the sphenoid
Where is the sphenoidal crest
Extends from the sphenoidal rostrum superiorly along the midline of the body
Where are the superior orbital fissures
These are the open spaces between the inferior surfaces of the lesser wings and the anterior surfaces of the greater wings
Where is the foramen rotundum
These are situated in the most anterior and medial part of the greater wings along side the body
Where is the foramen ovale
This is located of the posterior view on the greater wing under the pterygoid plate
Where is the foramen spinosum
This is located on the posterior view under the foramen ovale
Where are the infratemporal crest
these mark the ectocranial surfaces of the greater wings they form the base of the temporal fossae at about the level of the zygomatic arches
Which are the orbital surfaces
It the smooth parts on the front of the greater wings
Where are the anterior clinoid processes
These are the small posterior projections of the lesser wings
Where are the pterygoid processes
These are the legs of the owl and are divided into two plates
Which is the lateral and which is the medial pterygoid plate
On the legs of the owl the lateral if the furthest to the edge and for the medial is the closest to the middle
Where is the pterygoid hamulus
This is the hook like process forming the posterolateral basal corner of each medial pterygoid plate
Where are the pterygoid canals
These start above the pterygoid plates and run along their base
How would you side the sphenoid
From the pterygoid plates the fossa is inferior, for the greater wing the orbital surface is anterior, the lesser wing tips are lateral
