Techniques Flashcards
Effleurage
Single-handed, single reinforced, double handed, forearm, double alternating.
Benefits of effleurage
Distal to proximal in line with venous return, increases venous flow, improves circulation, reduces odema and vasodilation.
Petrissage
Kneading, palmar, open - c, wringing, picking up, muscle compressions.
Petrissage benefits
Cross fibres, loosens adhesions of muscle fibres and connective tissues, decrease fibrous thickening, can be used on deeper muscles.
Myofascial release
Direct and indirect
Soft tissue release
Passive, active assisted and active, 10 seconds x 3
Trigger pointing/ NMT
Apply pressure until an 8/10 and hold until it reduces to a 4/10 reapply to an 8/10 and repeat 3-4 times.
MET (Muscle Energy Techniques)
20-30% pushing against you (6 seconds x 3), deep breath in inbetween
Benefits of deep frictions
Stimulates fibre orientation, friction prevents adhesions, frictions induce a traumatic hyperaemia.
Benefits of STR
Improves mobility, targets area that are harder to stretch.
Benefits of myofasical release
Slowly stretch and palpate the muscles, patient may not feel much but is part of the experience.
Benefits of Trigger pointing/ NMT
Increasing mobility and movement, help blood flow.
Deep frictions
Shorten muscle, find scar tissue, use reinforced thumb, move transversely (across muscle) for 2.5 mins
Benefits of muscle energy technique (MET)
To mobilise restricted joints, lengthen and tense fascia, improve circulation.
Tapotment
Hacking, cupping, pounding
