Teams
-made when a job requires high level of employee interaction
Work team
-Collection of 3 or more individuals who interact intensively to provide an organizational product, plan, decision, service
>Factors:
-Identification
-Interdependence
-Power differentiation (lessen by treating others as equals)
-Social distance (lessen by being casual)
-Conflict management tactics
-Negotiation process (win-win style)
Types of teams
> Work teams
- formed to produce goods, provide service, increase quality and cost-effectiveness of a product
- CREW: expert specialists who each have specific role positions
> Parallel teams
- aka cross-functional teams
- consists of representatives from various departments within an organization
> Project teams
- formed to produce one-time outputs
- once goal is accomplished, team is dismantled
> Management teams
-provide general direction and assistance to the other teams
Group conflict
The psychological and behavioral reaction to a perception that another person is either keeping you from reaching a goal, taking away your right to behave in a particular way
-can either be functional or dysfunctional
Types of Conflict
> Interpersonal conflict -occurs between 2 individuals
Individual-group conflict -individual needs different from group’s needs
Group-group conflict -between 2 or more groups
Causes of conflict
- competition for resources
- task interdependence
- jurisdictional ambiguity
- communication barriers
- beliefs
- personality
Types of Difficult People
> High in control and quick
- Tank: pushy, yelling, aggressive
- Sniper: sarcasm, embarrassment, humiliation
- Know-it-all: dominance, reject arguments
> High in perfection and correct
- Whiner: complains in every situation
- No person: disagrees with every suggestion
- Nothing person: give up on difficult situations
> High in approval
- Yes: agrees to everything and cannot keep commitments
- Maybe person: never taking a stand
> High in attention
- Grenade: tantrums
- Friendly Sniper: poking fun at others
- Think-they-know-it-all: exaggerates, lies to gain attention
Conflict styles
>Avoiding >Accomodating >Forcing >Collaborating >Compromising
- Least Acceptable Result (LAR)
- lowest settlement one is willing to accept
- Maximum Supportable Position
- best possible settlement that a person can ask for
- Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement (BATNA)
- if negotiators cannot reach agreement
