TCAs all have what side effects?
CV effects, anticholinergic effects
CV side effects of TCAs
cardiotoxicity, orthostatic hypotension, right bundle branch block, ventricular tachycardia and heart block are lethal in an OD
Anticholinergic side effects
blurred vision, urinary retention, dry mouth, constipation, cognitive impairment, delirium
When to give TCAs (what time of day)
Nighttime to decrease sedative properties
Other side effects of TCAs
sexual dysfunction, weight gain, photosensitivity
Amitriptyline can cause what side effect?
urine discoloration
Abrupt D/C of a TCA can cause what?
TCA withdrawal syndrome
TCA withdrawal syndrome symptoms
Insomnia, sweating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, myalgias, nausea
Caution with using TCAs in what disease state
Thyroid disease
Avoid TCAs in what patients?
Patients with hepatic impairment
What should you avoid when taking a TCA?
alcohol
