Task 3Article ipact of socio emotional context Flashcards
The importznce of affective and contextual factors in adolescent risk taking explain situationn
Adolescents make very different risk decisions than adults ven though they have the same basic reasonin g and infromation processing skills.
What are othe rimportant factors in decision making?
Prior experience, social-emotional influences and social context.
Sensation seeking?
Inclination to seek varied, novel, complex and intense sensations and experiences and the willingness to take physical, social, legal and financial risks for the sake of such experiences.
Self regulation
Examples of these constructs?
Constructs that refer to the capacity to deliberately modukate ones thoughts, feelings or actions in the pursuit of planned goals. Among these constructs are impulse control, response inhibiton, emotion regulaton and attentional control
Dual system account?
Waht does it give accou t for?
System that characterizes decision making as the byproduct of interaction between processes that support controlled, reasoned and deliberative behavior and those that drive reactive, emotional and reward-sensitive responding.
Gives account fir why adolescents decision-making about risks seems to parallel that of adults
Limbic system and prefrontal corticl funnctions
Reactive hot pathway
Cold pathway
Reactive hot pathway
Role of socioemotinal contxtial factors?
Limbic system
decision making in high emotional conditions - irrational
This pathway is in a state of hypersnsitivity during adolescence
Socioemotional contextual factors provide a dirve to activation of this hypersensitive sytem.
Cold pathway
Prefrontal cortex
Decision making in low emotional conditions- rational
Why is there an increased risk taking in adolescence? cold and hot
Why not so much in adults?
Increased risk taking ina dolescence can be explained by an increased tendency for adolescents to use hot rather than cold pathway when there are effective contextual influences
Adults are less sesitive to affective inputs because responsiveness of affective pathway may be attenuated in adulthood and because adults possess fully matured capaxcity for cognitive control that allows impulsive reactive rsponses to be held in check .
Cognitive ontrol pathway
Affective pathway
Network of brain regions involved in self regulation (low control)
Affective pathway- Network of brai regions involved in emotions
