Siegler, R. S. (2007). Cognitive variability. Developmental Science, Task 1 Flashcards
Variability
Variability at childrens thinking is more present than we know and is present at alll ages and all points in learning
Within child cognitive varibaility
In different situautions childe use differnet strategies to tackle the same issue/
Trial to trial variability
Children use more advanced approaches to solve some type of tasks but not others
these regressions are temporary so progress appears to move back and forwarth rather than in a straight line
this variabiloty is even presented when same problem is presented on two days close in time
cognitive variabuility is present also at just one trial task as well as on separate exposures to a sama problem
Significance of within child variability
Variability is significqnt for predicting change analysing it an dunderstand itds mechanisms
not ll types of variability are positively related to leraning
Develommental differencdes in within child variabilitty
With age and experience variability can increase and decrease, vice-versa or saty constant
periods of stability(low variability) interchange with periods of transition (high variability) continuously
